March 15, 2025 | Baseball
In the second game, the Tigers held the Flames to just three runs and had key defensive plays to keep the contest close, but could not bring a run across the plate in a 3-0 loss.
Game 1: Princeton 5, Liberty 6
Andrew D'Alessio got the nod for the Tigers in the first game of the day. The Flames were able to load the bases on hits from their first three batters. D'Alessio was able to strike out back-to-back batters and force a fly out to escape the jam.
Liberty was able to tack on a run in the second before adding five in the bottom of the third.
Princeton responded with two runs in the fourth. Caden Shapiro led off the inning with a single and came around to score before Kevin Blowers' RBI base knock brought in Jake Bold. Another run came in for the Tigers on a sac-fly in the sixth as they worked to chip away at the lead.
Jake Koonin led off the seventh with a 3-1 count. The next pitch Koonin saw was sent over the centerfield wall for his third home run of the season and made the score 6-4.
The Tigers worked to rally after keeping the Flames from scoring in the final five innings. Bold doubled in the top of the ninth and Jake Kernodle walked to put two on. Nick Shenefelt hit a sac-fly to bring in Bold and cut the lead to one, but Princeton was unable to finish off the late rally.
Game 2: Princeton 0, Liberty 3
In the second game of the doubleheader, Liberty tacked a run on the board in the top of the first.
Starting pitcher Jackson Baldrate was able to hold the Flames to just the one run before Jacob Faulkner entered the game in the top of the fifth.
Liberty had two runners in scoring position with just one out. The batter flew out to center field and Grant Werdesheim made the catch. Immediately, Werdesheim made the throw home in time to get the runner for the double play and keep the Flames from scoring in the frame.
The Flames were able to plate its second run and again had two runners. A single to right juiced the bases, but in an attempt to get another run across, Liberty sent the runner around third. This time Jordan Kelly made the throw to Bold at home in time for the out and erased the scoring chance.
