Wrestling Concludes Day One of NCAA Championships with Five Alive in Consolation
March 20, 2025 | Wrestling
PHILADELPHIA, PA. – With all five qualifiers alive in wrestlebacks, the Princeton wrestling team completed day one of the NCAA Championships in Philadelphia.
In two sessions, the team moved through two rounds of competition, with three Tigers advancing into round two of the championship bracket and all five ending the day in consolation.
Session 1 Recap
Marc-Anthony McGowan was up first for the Tigers, kicking off the competition with a 4-3 decision over no. 20-seeded Brendan McCrone over Ohio state. An early takedown gave McGowan the lead, which he followed up with an escape point that would prove the difference as he took the narrow victory to advance.
#15 Ty Whalen avenged his loss from the Ivy semifinals on March 9, today defeating Cornell's #18 Ethan Fernandez in an NCAA rematch that saw Whalen walk away with the 4-0 decision.
#11 Luke Stout took care of business, too, controlling his first round match against #22 Mickey O'Malley of Drexel to get the 4-3 decision to advance. With his win, Stout will go on to face his sixth-seeded younger brother Mac in session two.
Eligh Rivera dropped a decision to Oklahoma State's #7 Tagen Jamison, while Kole Mulhauser fell to the Cowboys' #4 Dustin Plott in round one as both Tigers move into the consolation bracket.
Session 2 Recap
The marquee match of session two came in the 197 lb class as Luke Stout, seeded 11th, would take on his younger brother Mac Stout, the sixth-seeded wrestler from Pitt. The bout marked the first time two brothers wrestled each other at the NCAA Championships in NCAA history.
Exchanging a quick hug before the match started, the two talented wrestlers battled it out. Mac was able to get a 4-2 decision over Luke, with the two close brothers hugging again after the match while the sold-out Wells Fargo Center rose to their feet to applaud them. While Luke will move into the consolation bracket, he and Mac made their mark on the history of collegiate wrestling, and both will move on in search of All-American honors this weekend.
On the other end of the weight classes, Marc-Anthony McGowan fell in a heartbreaking match to #4 Vincent Robinson of NC State. After leading the entire match, a last-second takedown from Robinson sent McGowan into wrestlebacks with a 6-4 decision.
Ty Whalen also dropped a tech fall to the no.2-seeded Ridge Lovett of Nebraska, sending him into the consolation bracket.
In the wrestlebacks, Kole Mulhauser and Eligh Rivera each picked up wins as they began the road back after dropping first round contests. #29 Mulhauser earned a big 12-5 decision over #13 Evan Bockman of Iowa State University, sending him through to consolation round two.
Likewise, #26 Rivera earned a a thrilling sudden victory win over Mizzou's #23 Josh Edmond. Knotted at five apiece, regulation time expired and Rivera was ready for an OT battle - a situation he has been in, and won, twice before this season. Meeting the moment, Rivera found a takedown, and once again earned the sudden victory win to send him onwards in the wrestlebacks.
