Koonin Walks It Off In Baseball’s 14 Inning Thriller
March 23, 2025 | Baseball
PRINCETON, N.J.- The Princeton University baseball team played almost 20 innings of baseball by the time the sun went down on Saturday evening.
The score was knotted at 5-5 in the top of the 12th inning as both teams returned to the dugout to resume play on Saturday morning.
Dartmouth was able to break the tie in the top of the 14th inning with a two-out homerun off Justin Kim.
The strike would not deter the Princeton offense. Kevin Blowers led off the bottom of the frame with a single to third back to back bunts from Tommy Googins and Grant Werdesheim juiced the bases with no outs for the Tigers. Jake Koonin left the bases loaded in the 12th and was ready to bounce back. Koonin ripped the ball down the left field line to bring in two runs for a 7-6 victory over the Big Green and secure the first series win of the season.
Dartmouth got on the board with a string of singles but Princeton attacked right away in the bottom of the frame. Koonin scored on a Jake Kernodle sac-fly to even the score before Nick Shenefelt singled to bring in Caden Shapiro.
The Big Green took back the lead in the third with a two-spot in starter James Beasley's final inning of work.
Princeton again had an answer with three runs in the fourth, with Shapiro plating two on a big double to center field.
After holding the Big Green scoreless for three innings, Dartmouth was able to tie the game up at five a piece in the top of the seventh.
Both teams were unable to break the tie until seven innings later, in which Koonin's heroics finished off the win in the 14th frame gave Princeton the victory.
