Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Columbia
March 29, 2025 | Baseball
PRINCETON, N.J.- The Princeton baseball team faced the Columbia Lions for a battle atop the Ivy League standings. After dropping the first game, the Tigers battled back in a true test of grit to take the second game of the twin bill.
Game 1: Princeton 2, Columbia 10
Princeton starter Andrew D'Alessio tossed two shutout innings before the Lions were able to get on the board in the top of the third with two runs.
After being unable to get things going, Tommy Googins worked to create a spark with an RBI single to bring in Jordan Kelly to make it a one-run game.
D'Alessio finished his day after 6.0 innings and allowed just two runs on six hits while adding two punchouts.
Columbia was able to get the offense hot and tacked on six runs through the seventh and eighth.
The Tigers added a run in the bottom of the eighth but Columbia came out on top 10-2.
Game 1: Princeton 3, Columbia 2
Jacob Faulkner made his first start of the 2025 season after making 10 appearances in relief for the Tigers. The senior captain held the Lions scoreless through three and forced them to leave four stranded.
Columbia got its first run across on an RBI double, but Princeton would not let this deter them.
After being kept off the scoreboard through the first five innings, Jake Koonin slapped a triple to right to put a runner in scoring position for Caden Shapiro.
On a gutsy play, Shapiro put the ball in play before Koonin came sliding into home to tie things up at one a piece.
The Lions took back the lead in the top of the eighth but Koonin and Shapiro were ready to respond for Princeton once again.
Koonin doubled to left for his second extra base hit of the day. On the first pitch Shapiro saw, he launched it towards right field. The Columbia outfielder ran back to make a play but the ball flew over the wall for a two-run blast and a 3-2 Princeton lead.
Justin Kim and the Tiger defense forced Columbia to leave two runners stranded as Princeton picked up the win.
The Tigers will be back at Clarke Field for the rubber match with first pitch set for 12:00 PM.
