Princeton Bats Get Hot In Baseball’s 11-4 Victory Over VCU
March 08, 2025 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va.- The two games of the weekend series against the VCU Rams were night and day for Princeton. On Friday night, the Tigers recorded just two hits and were unable to bring in a run. On Saturday afternoon, the squad flipped the script as the offense exploded for 11 runs on 14 hits to pick up its second win of the season.
Jake Koonin started off the game with a single but was caught stealing to clear the bases. Caden Shapiro reached on a walk and advanced to second on a base hit from Jake Bold. Nick Shenefelt climbed into the box as the first pitch went for a strike. Immediately on the next pitch, Shenefelt knocked a single through the left side to record his first two RBI of the season. Once the Tigers had the lead, they never looked back.
Andrew D'Alessio got the nod and had a 1-2-3 inning capped with a strikeout before escaping a jam in the second to leave two Rams stranded.
The top of third began with a Koonin leadoff base hit and another Shapiro walk. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position for Bold. The catcher launched his second home run of the year to the opposite field to make the score 5-0.
The Rams went three-up three-down in the bottom of the frame and Princeton was back up to bat after chasing the VCU starter out of the ballgame. Koonin knocked his third hit in as many at-bats and Shapiro followed suit with his third walk in as many plate appearances. Again the leadoff pair moved into scoring position on a double steal. Two outs blinked on the scoreboard and that's when the Tigers really got going.
Jake Kernodle recorded his first hit of the season after not playing in the first eight games of the season to send Koonin and Shapiro home. Shenefelt walked to bring Tommy Googins up to the dish. Googins shot a hard double down the left field line to bump the lead to 8-0. Kevin Blowers extended the inning by hustling to first by capitalizing on an error by the Rams which allowed two more runs to come across.
VCU was finally able to get on the board in the bottom of the fourth by bringing in three runs
Shapiro notched his first hit of the day to give the Tigers their eleventh run in the fifth.
Justin Kim relieved D'Alessio in the sixth and tossed 3.0 innings of work and allowed just one unearned run to maintain his clean 0.00 ERA. Jacob Faulkner finished off the game in style with a big swinging strikeout as Princeton earned the 11-4 victory.
Five Tigers had multi-hit days, highlighted by Koonin's 3-4 day at the plate and reached base five times.
The rubber match between Princeton and VCU is set for Sunday at 1:00 PM
