DERBY, Conn. – In a thrilling race that went down to the wire at the Housatonic River Saturday morning, the No. 7 Princeton University heavyweight rowing team won the Carnegie Cup over No. 8 Yale and No. 15 Cornell.
"I was incredibly proud of the way the team stepped up to the racing today on all levels," said Head Coach Greg Hughes. "We had an athlete from our 1V go out with illness on Friday and we had to make some last-minute adjustments to every boat on the fly. I was impressed that the team embraced the challenge and executed some gritty performances in every event."
The Tigers' Carnegie Cup victory was its 40th in program history. The Carnegie Cup was presented in memory of Andrew Carnegie by Mrs. Andrew Carnegie in 1921. It is rowed for annually by Cornell, Princeton and Yale. The Big Red have won it 34 times and the Bulldogs 28.
The 1V (5:34.6) edged Yale (5:36.7) and finished well ahead of Cornell (5:46.3) to earn the Carnegie Cup.
The 2V (5:44.6) also prevailed, crossing the finish line in front of the Bulldogs (5:47.0) and the Big Red (5:54.4).
