Women's Soccer Shuts Out Villanova To Open Two-Match Weekend

Ally Murphy's 60th-minute goal, paired with a combined shutout effort from Cecilia Cerone and Sydney Romano between the posts, helped deliver the Princeton women's soccer team a 1-0 win over Villanova on Thursday night at Roberts Stadium.

Murphy's goal came on a penalty kick after the senior co-captain also was the player fouled in the 18 to draw the PK. The goal ended Villanova's shutout streak at 462:40 and was the Wildcats' first goal allowed since a 2-0 defeat to then-No. 10 Wake Forest on Aug. 21.

Princeton outshot Villanova 18-10 overall and 6-3 on goal. Cerone and Romano each played a half, with Cerone getting two saves before halftime and Romano making one save after the break.

Princeton will close the two-match weekend at Army West Point for a 1 p.m. kick on Sunday in what will be the Tigers' final game before the Ivy League season starts Sept. 19 at Penn.
