No. 5 Syracuse Tops No. 11 Princeton 1-0 On OT Penalty Stroke
September 12, 2025 | Field Hockey
Bo van Kempen passed for around 500 yards in regulation and then scored the game-winner in overtime, literally lifting No. 5 Syracuse to a 1-0 win over No. 11 Princeton Friday afternoon.
Â
Passed for 500 yards? In field hockey? Yes.
Â
Van Kempen, the reigning ACC Defensive Player of the Year, launched ariel pass after ariel pass all game, often reaching upwards of 60 or 70 yards at a time. That, along with the Syracuse press, kept Princeton from establishing too many good opportunities in the circle.
Â
The Princeton defense was also impressive, keeping Syracuse without a shot on goal until the first overtime period. Princeton was called originally for a penalty corner with 4:31 remaining in that 10-minute period, but the officials upgraded the call to a stroke after video review.
Â
Van Kempen then put her shot just past the outstretched stick of Tiger goalie Olivia Caponiti for the only goal of the day.
Â
Princeton, now 1-2 on the year, is at No. 18 Rutgers Sunday at noon. Princeton's losses are both by one goal, to Syracuse and to No. 2 North Carolina.
