No. 2 UNC Edges No. 10 Princeton In Front Of Overflow Bedford Crowd
September 07, 2025 | Field Hockey
The Sunday morning rains at Bedford Field went away at midday. The Sunday afternoon Bedford crowd showed up in huge numbers.Â
And the 1,500 or so who crammed into the facility saw an extraordinary early-season field hockey game.Â
In the end, second-ranked North Carolina edged No. 10 Princeton 3-2, scoring all three goals in a three-minute span between the end of the first half and start of the second. The Tigers scored first and last and pressured all the way to the end before falling just short.Â
Princeton is now 1-1 after splitting its games at this weekend's Tiger Invitational, defeating Old Dominion 2-1 Friday before the loss to UNC. The Tar Heels won both of their games this weekend, with a 6-2 win over Penn Friday as well. Penn defeated ODU 4-2 in Sunday's first game, which was played in the rain.Â
Beth Yeager started the scoring early in the second quarter off a penalty corner, with assists to inserter Lilly Wojcik and stopper Anna Faulstich.Olivia Caponiti, making her first career start in goal, made three huge saves in the final two minutes of the first half before Eliza Perrin's redirect just trickled in, tying it at 1-1 at the break.Â
UNC then scored two more times off penalty corners in the first two-plus minutes after intermission, building a 3-1 lead and putting the Tigers back on their heels. Molly Nye sparked the comeback, creating several turnovers on the press and helping Princeton start to draw penalty corners.Â

Princeton wlll be home Friday against Syracuse (5) and then at Rutgers this coming Sunday.Â

The Tigers literally cashed one in, when Ella Cashman redirected a feed from Yeager off one of the corners, making it 3-2 at the end of the third. Princeton took seven of the final eight shots of the game, including four in the fourth quarter, but could not tie it up.ÂCash from Beth after UNC had scored twice. Tar Heels up 3-2 end 3.
