Princeton Falls To Liberty, Bounces Back Against Virginia Tech
February 01, 2026 | Men's Tennis
A Sunday that started with a thriller ended up with a salvaged split for the Princeton men's tennis team.
The day at the Si Qin began with a wildly entertaining 4-3 Liberty win over the Tigers, with the deciding point in a third set tiebreaker at No. 4 that ran 2:45. How would Princeton bounce back in a matter of less than two hours against a rested Virginia Tech team?
The answer to that was: Perfectly. Princeton won the doubles point and then the first three singles matches across the finish to take a 4-0 win over the Hokies.
"It was good to see the guys bounce back in the second match after a disappointing loss to Liberty in the morning," said Princeton head coach Billy Pate. "That was an incredibly tough schedule for our team to have on the same day, and that's on me. We embrace all challenges, but I own that one for not putting our players in the best position to win. We did, however, have plenty of chances to close it out and simply didn't do it. Liberty took their chances and credit to them for finding a way. We'll learn from that as we do all matches and continue to grow each time on court. We responded well against Virginia Tech and finished the day on a good note."
Princeton won the doubles point against Liberty and also picked up wins at No. 1 singles from Paul Inschauspe and Sebastian Sec at No. 3. The match came down to a third-set tiebreaker at No. 4 between Liberty's David Ekpenyong and Princeton's Aleksandar Mitric, who went toe-to-toe for nearly three hours before Ekpenyong won the tiebreaker 7-3.
After a brief rest, the Tigers then won the doubles point and then singles matches from Fnu Nidunjianzan (No. 2), Sec (No. 4) and Milan Markovits (No. 5), winning those six combined sets without losing more than three games in any of them.
Princeton heads back on the road this coming weekend with matches at North Carolina State Friday and North Carolina Sunday.
