Miles Smith comes to Princeton University as Associate Director of Athletics Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. In his capacity, Smith will have oversight of all aspects of DEI education and training for student-athletes, coaches, and staff within the athletics department. Smith will also serve as the liaison to the University Office of Diversity and Inclusion and student-athlete affinity groups. Smith will hold the role of the department’s NCAA athletics diversity and inclusion designee.
The Philadelphia native served as the Associate Athletic Director for Compliance and Student Development at The College of New Jersey. Smith was responsible for working to develop educational, leadership, and support programming for student-athletes, and to research, identify and solicit student-athletes for participation in leadership, career, internship, and education programming offered by the NCAA and other organizations. Smith also served as the advisor for Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and Athletic Diversity Inclusion Designee (ADID). In Smith's role as ADID, he worked with The College of New Jersey Inclusive Excellence Department on several initiatives such as the We Are TCNJ: A Strategy for Inclusive Excellence strategic plan and The Men of Color Success Initiative.
Prior to The College of New Jersey Smith served as assistant director of athletics/head men's basketball coach at Northern Vermont University-Johnson. Smith was responsible for all aspects of compliance for the institution, the conference, and the NCAA, including analyzing and interpreting NCAA rules on recruiting, eligibility, financial aid, and many other regulations.
Smith held several other roles at NVU-Johnson, including ADID, Advisor for Coalition of Minority Student-Athletes (COMSA), and adjunct professor. As the ADID, Smith was a member of the Diversity & Inclusion Task Force and the Racial Equity Alliance of Lamoille. Smith implemented diversity and inclusion initiatives for the athletics department and developed programming for BIPOC student-athletes. Smith played an instrumental role in developing the Northern Vermont University-Johnson DEI climate survey, serving as an equity advocate for faculty and staff hires, and implementing and advising Northern Vermont University Coalition of Minority Student-Athletes.
Miles's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion work extended into the Northern Vermont University larger community serving as a collaborator on the Lamoille Art & Justice Project which is a collaboration that merges public art, oral histories, podcasting, and literature to foster connection and community for PGM (People of the Global Majority) in Vermont across generations.
Smith holds an associate degree in liberal arts from Mercer Country Community College, a bachelor’s degree in anthropology/sociology minoring in psychology from Northern Vermont University, and a master’s degree from Liberty University.
Smith resides in Ewing, NJ with his wife Crystal Smith and three children Ishmael, Elias and Amaya Smith.
