Ryan Hayward was named an assistant coach in April 2015. He works primarily with the Princeton defense with a focus on goalkeeping.
Hayward was honored with the Princeton coaching staff in 2018 as the NCAA Northeast Regional Coaching Staff of the Year. The Tigers won the Ivy League and reached the NCAA Tournament. Princeton's defense ranked 17th nationally in goals against average and goalkeeper Jacob Schachner is now eighth all-time at Princeton in shutouts with 10 in his career.
A 2001 graduate of The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), Hayward earned a degree in Economics. He was captain and four-year starting goalkeeper for the Lions from 1997-00. He was named NSCAA Adidas Metro Regional Team as a senior, as well as all-New Jersey Athletic Association (NJAC) while finishing his collegiate career with a 1.14 goals against average.
Hayward is the former owner of Total Soccer, LLP located in Warminster, Pa. Founded in 2002, Total Soccer is a full-service soccer training organization with three indoor training facilities in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. As the owner, Hayward managed a staff of 25-30 employees, and maintained relationships with 20-25 major accounts including club, town and partner organizations.
Hayward is the director of coaching at the Buckingham United Soccer Club in Doylestown, Pa. Buckingham has 45 travel soccer teams for children ages 8-18. Since Hayward joined the organization in 2011, Buckingham has seen a increase in tryout participation by 37 percent and a player retention rate of 94 percent.
He was the top assistant and goalkeeper coach at his alma mater TCNJ from 12 seasons, from 2003-14. There he coached the Lions goalkeeper Matt Kasperavicius to both NJAC 2005 Goalie of the Year honors and All-America honors. In 2014, he was instrumental in coaching Aaron Utman to NJAC Goalie of the Year honors.
Hayward spent six years working with the New Jersey Olympic Development Program (ODP). From 2010-13 he was the director of boy's goalkeeping training, designing and implementing year-round goalie training programs for the U13-U18 teams. He was also the Region 1 ODP Boys Identification Camp goalkeeper evaluator from 2007-13.Additional coaching experience includes director of boy’s goalkeeper training at the The Player’s Development Academy and the head goalie coach of the New Jersey Sky Blue of the Women’s Professional Soccer league.
He holds a USSF National A License, an NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, NSCAA National Goalkeeper Diploma and a USYSA National Youth License.
