RICHMOND, Va. - Emily Townsend (Fr., Houston, Tx.) recorded her first career hat trick to lead the Princeton University field hockey team to a 5-1 win over Virginia Commonwealth. Townsend opened the scoring with a penalty-corner goal at the 4:39 mark. That lead stood until fellow Class of 2003 member Ilvy Friebe (Fr., Bonn, Germnay) took a pass from Hilary Matson (Jr., Marathon, N.Y.) and scored her ninth goal of the year at the 21:18 mark.
The rest of the first half belonged to Townsend. The Texas native scored an unassisted goal with just under eight minutes left and then completed the hat trick with another penalty-corner blast at 33:40.
A goal by VCU's Wendy Ray cut the lead to 4-1, but Melanie Meerschwam (Jr., Amstelveen, The Netherlands) ended the scoring by putting in a penalty stroke at 48:55.
Princeton outshot VCU 33-11 and outcornered it 11-3. Joelle Kueng (So., Kelowna, B.C.) made five saves to notch her first career victory.
Princeton improves to 9-6 overall and will play its final home game of the season Wednesday night against Columbia.
