PRINCETON, N.J. - Kirsty Hale (Sr., Virginia Beach, Va.) scored once in the first half and twice in the second to lead the third-ranked Princeton University field hockey team to a 5-1 win over Boston University, which was ranked 20th in the preseason poll. Melanie Meerschwam (Amstelveen, The Netherlands) also had a goal in each half for the Tigers.
Hale, who is two goals away from tying assistant coach Amy MacFarlane's record for all-time goals at Princeton (60), scored her first goal off a pass from Molly O'Malley (Sr., Tunkhannock, Pa.) early in the game. Her second goal came off a pass from Christine Hunsicker (Sr. Walnutport, Pa.), while her third came off a pass from AnnMarie Reich (Sr., Washington Depot, Conn.) on a penalty corner.
"We knew (Boston University) had speed on its front line," Princeton coach Beth Bozman said, "but not as much on the back line. We wanted to jump hard on them and force the issue. We started playing well when we were passing the ball to each other."
Meg DeJong (Sr., Tinton Falls, NJ) won her second game in as many days with seven saves. The Tigers will open defense of their four consecutive Ivy League crowns when they travel to Cornell on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
