Princeton, N.J. - Sophomore Cory Picketts (Marmora, N.J.) scored the game-winning goal with 5:07 remaining to lead the Princeton field hockey team to a 2-1 win over defending national champion and top-seed, Old Dominion in the second round of the 2001 NCAA Championships. The win sends the Orange and Black to the Final Four, where it will meet Michigan, a 2-1 winner over Michigan State, at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 16.
Junior Ilvy Friebe (Bonn, Germany) gave Princeton an early 1-0 lead at 26:23. Friebe provided the initial insert on a penalty corner and passed the ball to freshman Natalie Martirosian (Richmond, Va.). Martirosian passed back down to Friebe who then fired a shot just inside the left side of the cage and passed the pad of Lady Monarch goalie Marybeth Freeman (Holland, Pa.). Old Dominion tied the game at 18:25 on a goal by sophomore Lynn Farquhar (Alexandria, Va.). Classmate Melissa Leonetti (Erdenheim, Pa.) sent a pass in front of the goal and Farquhar was able to sneak it past Princeton keeper Kelly Baril (Peabody, Mass.) to tie the game at 1-1.
The two teams battled at both ends of the field for the next 48 minutes until Picketts scored the go-ahead goal at the 5:07 mark.
"The ball deflected off an Old Dominion defenders stick and I picked it up," said Picketts. "I didn't want to take a big shot so I held on to it for an extra second and just pushed it."
Even though the goal gave Princeton a 2-1 lead, there were still five minutes to go in the contest. The Tiger's defense, led by junior co-captain Emily Townsend (Houston, Texas) came up big and did not succumb to the relentless Lady Monarch pressure, fending off multiple Old Dominion penalty corner opportunities in the waning minutes. The final Lady Monarch offensive push was thwarted with 15 seconds left when Picketts intercepted an Old Dominion pass just around the edge of the circle. She sent the ball down to the other end of the field as the final seconds ticked off the clock and Princeton came away with the 2-1 win.
Baril had a tremendous game in goal for the Tigers and finished with nine saves, all of which came in the first half. Freeman had three saves on the day, including a great stop on a Friebe breakaway with 24 minutes left to go in the second half to keep the game tied at 1-1.
Princeton will be making its fourth trip to the NCAA Final Four. The Tigers made three-straight appearances from 1996-98, reaching the title game in 1996 and 1998.
