INDIANAPOLIS - Five-time Olympic medalist Marion Jones will headline a star-studded field at the opening event of USA Track & Field's 2001 Outdoor Golden Spike Tour, the GST Open at the Princeton Invitational on May 12.
Jones, who will compete in the 100 meters at Princeton, leads a field that includes U.S. Olympic medalists Angelo Taylor, Nick Hysong, Melissa Morrison, Terrence Trammell, Passion Richardson, Antonio Pettigrew, Lawrence Johnson, Ken Brokenburr and Jerome Young.
The meet will take place at William Weaver Stadium on the campus of Princeton University. Collegiate events begin at 10:30 a.m. with the Golden Spike events beginning at 1:00 p.m. (field events) and 2:00 p.m. (track events). The Golden Spike Tour portion of the meet is structured as a fan-friendly, action-packed event and seating is limited, so fans are encouraged to arrive early to watch these world-class athletes.
Named 2000 Athlete of the Year by the Associated Press, Reuters, and ESPN, Jones won Olympic gold in the 100 meters, 200 meters and 4x400-meter relay at the Olympics in Sydney. She also captured bronze medals in the long jump and 4x100m relay, becoming the first woman ever to win five medals in track and field at a single Olympics. After debuting this season on April 21 at the Mt. SAC Relays, Jones anchored the U.S. women's 4x400m team to victory at last weekend's USA vs. The World at the Penn Relays. In addition to competing at Princeton, Jones will also compete at the U.S. Open in Palo Alto, Calif., on June 9, the third stop on USATF's 2001 Golden Spike tour, before heading to the GMC Envoy USA Outdoor Championships June 21-24 in Eugene, Ore. Including her appearance on May 27 at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Jones will appear at six major meets in the U.S. during the 2001 Outdoor season. Passion Richardson, Jones' 4x100m relay teammate from Sydney, will challenge her in the 100 meters at the GST Open.
Olympic 400-meter hurdles champion and 4x400m gold medalist Angelo Taylor will also be in the field at Princeton. Taylor ended the 2000 season ranked No. 1 in the world in the 400m hurdles. His 4x400m relay teammates from Sydney Antonio Pettigrew and Jerome Young will also appear in Princeton, where all three will compete in the 400 meters.
The pole vault competition will feature 2000 Olympic gold medalist Nick Hysong along with Lawrence Johnson, who won the silver medal in Sydney. Both cleared 19 feet, 4.25 inches in Sydney, with Hysong earning the gold by clearing that height on his first attempt. Johnson has been the dominant vaulter in the world this year, setting a new American indoor record of 19' 6.50" in winning the 2001 U.S. Indoor title in Atlanta and going on to win the world indoor title.
Terrence Trammell will compete in the 100 meters in Princeton after capturing the silver medal in the 110-meter hurdles in Sydney. Earlier this season, Trammell won his second U.S. indoor 60-meter hurdles crown in a row prior to winning the World Championship in Lisbon. Trammell will be challenged in the 100m by Ken Brokenburr, who won a gold medal in the men's 4x100m relay in Sydney.
Olympic bronze medalist Melissa Morrison will take on a strong field in the women's 100-meter hurdles. Morrison, who finished second in the 100m hurdles at last year's U.S. Olympic Trials, ended the 2000 season ranked No. 4 in the world, and No. 2 in the U.S.
Tickets will be available at the gate. Ticket prices are: $15 (Adults), $5.00 (Students & Children). Members of USA Track & Field will be admitted for $5.00 (Adults) & $3.00 (Students).
