Princeton, N.J. - Tiger sophomore Gretchen Anderson notched a hat-trick, to give her team its twelfth victory of the season, a 4-3 decision over the visiting Cornell Big Red.
The Tigers (12-6-1, 8-3 ECAC) got on the scoreboard first when Cornell was unable to clear the puck out of its zone as sophomore Gretchen Anderson intercepted the puck and rifled it past Big Red goaltender Liz Connelly at 7:19 of the first period.
Clinging to the 1-0 lead early in the second stanza, Princeton took control on its third power play opportunity of the contest. Lisa Rasmussen gave the Tigers a two-goal lead at 3:44 on an assist from senior captain Aviva Grumet-Morris. The Big Red narrowed the Princeton lead to one on a player advantage of its own less than five minutes later as sophomore Briana Jentner fed senior Eva Nahorniak for her second goal in as many games. Junior Brooke Bestwick also was awarded with an assist on the Cornell tally. Both teams continued to exchange goals in the third, but Princeton was able to keep the lead throughout the final 20 minutes as Anderson netted two more goals to earn the hat trick. At 6:06 of the period, Princeton's power play line was successful yet again as junior Nikola Holmes assisted on Anderson's second goal of the game to push the lead back to two. Cornell would convert just over five minutes later as Bestwick, last week's ECAC-North player of the week, netted a slapper that deflected off Princeton goaltender Megan Van Beusekom to close the margin to 3-2.
Anderson would yet again add to the Princeton lead as she put the finishing touches of her hat trick with nearly five minutes remaining in regulation on assists from Wanda Mason and Susan Hobson. However, the Cornell offense, which outshot Princeton's 15-5 in the third, would continue to put pressure on the Tigers and once again cut the lead to a single goal. With 3:10 left in the period, sophomore Anita Khar sent a rebound from a Bestwick shot to the back of the net to make it a 4-3.
Cornell managed a few opportunities in the game's final minutes in its attempt to tie the game. Senior co-captain Jenel Bode was robbed of a goal by a glove-side save from Van Beusekom in the final minute and the Princeton defense stayed strong to earn the win. After the victory the Tigers' season record stands at 12-6-2 with a 8-3 conference mark.
"We expected a game like that from Cornell," said Princeton head coach Jeff Kampersal. "They were playing well, coming off two big wins over Brown and Harvard. I am proud of how we played tonight. We are pretty banged up across the board, but the women deserve a lot of credit."
The Tigers did suffer a signifgant loss on defense, as Katherine Maglione went down in the first period with a concussion and did not return.
The Tigers return to action Saturday afternoon when they take on Colgate at Baker Rink. At 4 p.m.
