Box Score
PRINCETON, N.J. - Senior midfielder Andrea Voros scored on a penalty stroke with just over 11 minutes remaining to lead the Ohio Bobcats (1-2) to a 3-2 victory over the No. 13 Princeton Tigers (0-1) Friday night at Class of 1952 Stadium. The Tigers rallied from a 2-0 deficit to even the score in the second half, but could not rally a final time to avoid its first season-opening loss in 10 years.
Ohio entered halftime with a 2-0 advantage on unassisted scores by freshman Lindsay Rothenberger and sophomore Elizabeth Unger. Rothenberger opened the scoring by rebounding her own shot and beating senior All-America goalkeeper Kelly Baril (Peabody, Mass.) for a score at 15:26. Unger found a loose ball in a group of players and knocked the second goal into the right side of the cage at the 32:05 mark. Princeton came out with resolve in the second half and evened the score with a pair of goals by freshmen. Hillary Schmidt (Westtown, Pa.) took a pass in front of the cage by sophomore Nicole Riner (St. Louis, Mo.) and beat Ohio goalkeeper Ashley Pitkin at the 49:58 mark. Princeton maintained the pressure and evened the score on a play started by junior midfielder Cory Picketts (Marmora, N.J.). Picketts took the ball upfield and drew the defense her way before sending a lead pass to freshman attacker Ali Shames-Dawson (Monmouth Beach, N.J.). The rookie did the rest, putting a shot past an outstretched Pitkin for the Tigers' second goal.
Ohio bounced back and was able to get the ball into the Princeton circle three minutes later. A Bobcat shot was saved by Baril, who ended up on top of the ball for a penalty. Voros took the ensuing stroke and put it into the left side of the cage for the game-winning goal. Princeton had a number of opportunities late, but the Ohio defense kept the Tigers from any close-range shots.
Baril ended the game with five saves, while Pitkin also had five saves. Princeton, the eight-time defending Ivy League champions, will travel to Yale for the Ivy League opener Sunday at 12:30.
