New York, N.Y. - Emily Kroshus ran the fifth-fastest time in Ivy League cross country championship history and the fastest in the last 16 years to cruise to the Ivy League Heptagonal championship at Van Cortlandt Park Friday afternoon.
Kroshus, the senior from Calgary, finished the 5,000 meter course in 17:15.8, the best time in the Heps championships since Princeton's Laura Cattivera's 17:14.7 in 1987. Kroshus was Princeton's first Heps champion since Cattivera, and she joined Cattivera and Lynn Jennings in 1979 as the only Tigers to win the title.
Princeton, ranked 14th in Division I, finished just behind No. 12 Columbia in the team standings. The Lions, who went 3-4-6-9-11, totalled 33 points, edging out the Tigers, who finished with 38. Cack Ferrell, a Princeton sophomore from Minnesota, finished second in the race at 17:18.5. Ferrell was the only runner within five seconds of Kroshus, and only four others finished within 30 seconds of the leader.
"It was fun being out there with Cack," said Kroshus. "I'm just sorry that our team didn't win. Columbia ran a very good tactical race. I'm still looking forward to the rest of the season. I think we're going to do great things."
Princeton's Carrie Strickland finished seventh to earn first-team All-Ivy honors. Laura Petrillo finished 13th, followed by Catha Mullen in 15th.
"The pace was very quick," said Princeton coach Peter Farrell. "I think that helped Columbia little. You have to tip your hat to them. They ran a great race. It was a great day and a great experience to be a part of. It just hurts to lose, that's all."
