Princeton and Rutgers tonight will renew a women's soccer rivalry that dates to the ninth game in program history, back in 1980. The Tigers have played only one team - Brown - more than they've played Rutgers. The 21st meeting between the two schools features two teams with big-time NCAA tournament hopes.
Poll cats - Princeton enters tonight's game ranked 23rd in the NSCAA poll. The Tigers were 21st a week ago.
History lesson - Princeton is 5-3-0 against Rutgers since Julie Shackford became head coach; Princeton was 3-7-2 against Rutgers prior to that.
More history - Princeton has played Rutgers 20 times (8-10-2). The only team Princeton has played more than Rutgers is Brown.
In case you forgot - Princeton has defeated Rutgers each of the last two regular seasons. Princeton lost to Rutgers in the second round of the 2001 NCAA tournament. Common opponent, sort of - Princeton and Rutgers have one common opponent, sort of. Rutgers defeated Stony Brook 3-0, while Princeton's game with Stony Brook was postponed when the officials did not show up for the game.
Streak-buster - Princeton was undefeated prior to a 3-2 loss to Dartmouth Sunday afternoon. Dartmouth scored the game-winning goal with 48 seconds remaining.
More streak-buster - Esmeralda Negron had her streak of consecutive games with at least one goal snapped against Dartmouth. Negron had scored at least one goal in each of the first seven games.
Moving up the charts - Esmeralda Negron is eighth all-time in goals scored at Princeton with 22. She needs one to move into a four-way tie for fifth and four to move into a tie for second.
Em-pressive - Emily Behncke has four goals, four assists and 12 points through eight games. She had five goals, no assists and 10 points all of last year, when she was the Ivy League Rookie of the Year.
One Maura time - Maura Gallagher, a sophomore, has equaled her freshman season totals with three goal s and four assists.
Net results - Princeton has used two goalkeepers in every game thi s season. Madeleine Jackson has played the first half, while Emily Volgelzang has played the second half.
Geography lesson - Princeton's starting defense consists of three Canadians (Rochelle Willis, Brea Griffiths, Janine Willis) and one Hawaiian (Romy Trigg-Smith).
We are the champions - Theresa Sherry and Elizabeth Pillion were both All-Americas for Princeton's NCAA champion women's lacrosse team a year ago. Sherry scored the game-winning goal in overtime to defeat Virginia 8-7 in the championship game.
Oh say can you see - Theresa Sherry has sung the national anthem before every home women's lacrosse and women's soccer game during her four years at Princeton. The Tigers are 52-8-1 in those games.
A league of their own- Princeton has won at least a share of the Ivy League title each of the last three seasons, including the program's first outright title a year ago.
November madness- Princeton has played in each of the last four NCAA tournaments.
