Final Stats
Emily Behncke and Esmeralda Negron each had a goal and assist to lead Princeton to a 3-0 win over UNC Greensboro on the first day of the Princeton Invitational.
Penn and Saint Louis played a 1-1 tie in the first game of the doubleheader. Penn will face UNC Greensboro and Princeton will face Saint Louis Sunday, with the first game at noon.
"It was our first time on Lourie-Love Field," said Behncke, the 2002 Ivy League Rookie of the Year. "We were a little jittery at first, but I think we settled down."
Princeton outshot UNC Greensboro 32-2 and dominated the scoring chances. Still, the only goal of the first 82 minutes came from Maura Gallagher, who redirected Behncke's drive into the top right corner 11 minutes into the game to make it 1-0. Despite all of its opportunities, Princeton couldn't add to its lead until Behncke scored off a feed from Negron at 82:11. Negron completed the scoring almost six minutes later, when she knocked in a loose ball in front after Elizabeth Pillion's shot rolled loose.
Jennifer Stillman made 14 saves for UNC Greesboro, who played without leading scorer Rakel Logadottir, out with a knee injury.
"We're happy to get the win," said Princeton coach Juile Shackford. "Now we have Saint Louis, and they look like a very good team."
Penn's Cathy Roe scored in the 62nd minute of the first game to make it 1-0, but Saint Louis salvaged the tie when Christie Cigno headed in Tara Gresco's cross with 56 seconds remaining in regulation. The teams played 20 minutes of overtime with no score.
