HANOVER, N.H. - One week earlier, the Princeton field hockey team allowed an Ivy League opponent to rally from a big deficit and force overtime. Consider a lesson learned from that game, as the No. 10 Tigers jumped out early and never looked back in a 5-1 win at Dartmouth in the first road game for first-year coach Kristen Holmes-Winn.
Princeton, the nine-time defending Ivy League champions, moved to 2-0 in the Ivy season with the win. Five different Tigers scored, including the first goal of the season for Kelly Darling.
Following 24 minutes of scoreless play, Lauren Quinn got Princeton on the scoreboard with an unassisted tally at the 24:24 mark. Lauren Ehrlichman added a goal with 2:09 remaining in the half off an assist from Ashley Sennett. While that was all the offense could produce in the first 35 minutes, the Princeton defense was more than up to the task. The Big Green was held without a shot for the first half, and only managed seven for the entire contest.
Claire Miller scored off a pass from Quinn at the 38:02 mark of the game to open a 3-0 lead for the Tigers, who have now won 26 straight Ivy League games. Cory Picketts and Darling added unassisted goals in the final 10 minutes. Allison Nemeth made three saves in goal, but her shutout attempt was ended with 8:18 remaining in the game, when Lexie Otto scored an unassisted goal.
The Tigers will face their stiffest test of the season Friday, when they travel to College Park, Md., for a matchup with the No. 3 Terrapins. Maryland owns a five-game winning streak over the Tigers, including a tight 2-1 win in Princeton last season. The last time Princeton defeated Maryland was in 1998, when a last-minute goal by Molly O'Malley gave the Tigers a 1-0 win; that season, Princeton went to the NCAA championship game.
