Princeton, N.J. - Casey Lockwood had her fifth double-double of the season and Katy O'Brien hit four threes for 21 points to lead Princeton past Brown 66-53 in Jadwin Gym. Lockwood scored 16 points and tied a career-high of 11 rebounds as the Tigers (4-11, 1-1) handed Brown (9-7, 2-1) its first conference loss of the year.
"We had a tremendous start shooting the ball," head coach Richard Barron said. "After that, we executed our defensive plan and found ways to make plays down the stretch to maintain a double-digit lead."
The Tigers came out on fire, gaining possession on the jump ball and setting up Katy Digovich for a three on their first trip down the court. A steal and a layup by Katy O'Brien put Princeton ahead 5-0 before Brown ever reached its frontcourt. The Tigers easily handled the Bears' full-court pressure and all five players scored within the first four minutes for a 16-5 lead at 15:56. Meanwhile, Brown missed seven of its first nine shots and turned the ball over 10 times before Princeton reached its greatest lead of the game, 32-11 at 8:08 in the first.
Ali Smith and O'Brien combined for 5-for-9 shooting behind the arc while the Bears shot just 1 for 6 from long range. O'Brien led all scorers with 14 points at the break and Lockwood was halfway to her fifth career double-double with six points, five boards and four assists.
Holly Robertson led Brown with seven first-half points while the Bears' leading scorer and rebounder Nyema Mitchell was held to just four points and two boards.
With a ten-point lead to start the second, Princeton remained composed and never let the Bears within less than nine. Becky Brown, Lockwood and Digovich grabbed critical rebounds while O'Brien and Smith out-hustled Brown and hit their open shots. Digovich finished with a season-high 14 rebounds, including 11 on the defensive end, and added seven points and five assists.
Four Princeton players finished in double-figures behind O'Brien's season-high 21 points. Lockwood had 16 off 8-for-14 shooting while Brown and Smith added 11 and 10 points apiece.
Mitchell led Brown with 19 points, 15 of which came in the second half, and a team-high eight rebounds. Princeton out-rebounded the Bears 46-40 and held them to 33% field goal shooting and 23% from long range.
Knocking off the first-placed team in the Ivy League, the Tigers improve to 4-11 overall and 1-1 in the conference. They host Yale (3-13, 0-3) tomorrow, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs lost twice to Brown and fell to Penn 59-57 tonight at the Palestra.
