ITHACA, N.Y. - The Princeton field hockey team is the 10-time defending Ivy League champion, and the Tigers certainly looked the part Sunday with a dominating performance for the second straight day.
Ali Shames-Dawson came off the bench to score her first goal since 2002 late in the first half and Lauren Quinn and Natalie Martirosian added second-half goals as the Tigers defeated Cornell, 3-0, in a game played at a brisk Schoellkopf Field Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Tigers (5-8) improved to 4-1 in the Ivy League, one-half game behind undefeated Harvard (4-0) in the league standings. Princeton meets the Crimson next week at Class of 1952 Stadium with a chance to take the league lead. Princeton outshot the Big Red 21-3 Sunday, including 11-1 in the decisive second half. The Tigers held Cornell (2-9, 1-4 Ivy) to just one penalty corner and had 12 corners of their own, including eight in the first half.
Shames-Dawson, who missed all of last season due to injury, scored the game winner for Princeton with 13:26 left in the first half. The Tigers quickly added to that lead after halftime, when Lauren Quinn scored her second unassisted goal in as many days for a 2-0 Princeton lead.
The Tigers then added some insurance on a penalty-corner situation with just less than 20 minutes remaining in the game. Hillary Schmidt's push went to her sister, Paige, who sent a feed to Natalie Martirosian. Martirosian's shot beat Cornell goalie Lori Blutinger for a 3-0 advantage. The goal was Martirosian's first of the season.
Blutinger had seven saves for Cornell, which hasn't beaten the Tigers since the 1990 season. Allison Nemeth played all 70 minutes in goal for Princeton and was not forced to make a save in the game.
In wins over Brown and Cornell this weekend, Princeton outscored the Bears and Big Red 9-0 and outshot its opponents 68-7.
The Princeton-Harvard game next Saturday begins at noon. Penn (3-1) is also in the league race as the regular season hits its final weeks.
