NEW YORK, N.Y. - Behind three top 10 finishes, including a fifth-place performance by junior Cack Ferrell, the Princeton women's cross country team finished second overall at the 2004 Ivy League Heptagonal Cross Country Championships at Van Cortlandt Park Friday.
Ferrell's time of 17:24.9 was just 12 seconds behind race winner Caroline Bierbaum of Columbia in a tightly-packed bunch at the front of the race. Meredith Lambert came in close behind in seventh place, finishing in 17:29, while Mia Swenson was 10th overall in 17:47.5.
Columbia's 13-point winning margin came as a result of its fourth and fifth finishers--the teams were tied at 22 points after their first three respective finishers. The Lions' Lisa Stublic and Carmen Ballard placed 14th and 15th, respectively, while the Tigers' Carrie Strickland and Marian Bihrle crossed the line in 20th and 22nd place. Columbia's 51 points gave the Lions the team title for the third straight year, while Princeton's 64 points gave the Tigers a second-place finish behind the Lions for a second year in a row. Yale challenged for a top-two spot, with Lindsey Donaldson and Cara Kiernan each finishing in the top four, but settled for third place with 73 points.
Dartmouth, Cornell, Harvard, Brown and Penn rounded out the order of finish.
Bierbaum won the race in the final stretch, passing Cornell's Kate Boyles to win in 17:12.2. Boyles ended up in third place behind Yale's Donaldson.
Columbia also won the men's race, giving the Lions the first Heps sweep in cross country since Dartmouth won both races in 1995.
