UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Behind the strong running of Cack Ferrell and Meredith Lambert, each of whom placed in the top 10, and a terrific 13th-place performance by sophomore Mia Swenson, the Princeton women's cross country team finished an impressive third at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional meet held at Penn State's Blue & White Golf Courses Saturday.
Ferrell ran the six-kilometer course in 21:08 to finish sixth overall at the meet, while Lambert was just 13 seconds behind that in eighth place. Swenson's pace was just nine seconds off Lambert's on the way to a 13th-place finish. Princeton's 83 points nearly caught second-place Villanova, which finished with 68 points. Race winner West Virginia (63) and Villanova automatically qualify for the NCAA championships at Indiana State later this month, though the Tigers can still receive an at-large bid into the national meet.
Also scoring for the Tigers were senior Marian Bihrle, who finished 30th overall in a time of 22:17, and senior Carrie Strickland, who finished just one second behind in Bihrle in 31st. Junior Suzanne Andrews and freshman Heather Iatauro gave Princeton seven runners in the top 41 in the meet.
Pittsburgh's Maureen McCandless won the individual race, finishing in a time of 20:26 to outdistance American's Keira Carlstrom by 11 seconds. West Virginia placed three runners in the top 8 and four in the top 15 to edge Villanova for the regional championship.
