NORFOLK, Va. - Janelle Engle scored on a penalty corner with time expired in the first half to break open a tight game and Old Dominion scored four times in a seven-minute span in the second half as the No. 7 Monarchs defeated Princeton, 8-2, in a field hockey game played at Foreman Field Sunday afternoon.
Old Dominion (13-6), which got two goals apiece from four different players, scored its eight goals on just 12 shots. Engle, Dana Sensenig, Beth Maddox and Shannon Mobley all scored two goals, with Mobley and Sensenig scoring in a 57-second span midway through the second half to turn a 4-2 lead into a 6-2 ODU advantage.
Princeton (7-9), which had defeated No. 13 William & Mary Saturday, got behind by two goals twice in the first half but rebounded each time thanks to goals from Lauren Ehrlichman. Ehrlichman first scored with just over nine minutes left in the first half to cut Old Dominion's lead to 2-1, then scored again with 4:03 left in the half to make the score 3-2. Engle's goal on a penalty corner with no time remaining on the first-half clock put the Monarchs ahead 4-2 at halftime. Maddox scored just 6:30 into the first half to give Old Dominion a lead it would not relinquish, and Mobley then scored an unassisted goal off a rebound of Princeton goalie Allison Nemeth for a 2-0 lead midway through the first half.
Nemeth had four saves for the Tigers, who finished the game nearly even with the Monarchs in penalty corners (9-10). Mary Cate Gordon saved five of Princeton's 10 shots to earn the victory in net for ODU.
The Monarchs scored on three of their 10 penalty-corner opportunities. Ehrlichman had five of Princeton's 10 shots on the day.
Princeton plays its regular-season finale Friday night (7 p.m.) against Penn at Class of 1952 Stadium, and a win will give the Tigers at least a share of an 11th straight Ivy League title and a NCAA tournament berth for the fifth consecutive year.
