Final Stats
While Elizabeth Pillion has scored 73 goals in three seasons of women's lacrosse at Princeton, she isn't exactly used to scoring goals this time of year.
Pillion scored her first goal of this soccer season and third of her career and freshman Diana Matheson added her fifth of the season to lead 12th-ranked Princeton to a 2-0 win over Brown at Lourie-Love Field Saturday afternoon.
Princeton improved to 9-1 overall and 3-0 in the Ivy League. Brown fell to 4-6 overall and 1-2 in the league. Brown is now 4-0 at home and 0-6 on the road.
The win was the 11th straight at home for the Tigers, who set a school record for consecutive home victories. The old record of 10 was set from 1979-80.
"It's always fun to score," said Pillion, a first-team All-America in lacrosse and a defender in soccer. "I have to thank Ron [Celestin, assistant coach]. I told him I wanted to get more involved on the offense on corner kicks, and he let me." Pillion's goal, at the 18:28 mark, was a header off a corner kick from Maura Gallagher. It was the 13th career assist for the junior Gallagher, who moved into fourth place all-time in assists at Princeton.
Princeton doubled its lead seven minutes after halftime off a free kick, as Matheson tucked the ball just inside the left post.
The Tigers outshot Brown 22-2 as they evened the all-time series between the teams at 11-11-3. Brown is the only team Princeton has played in every season it has had a varsity women's soccer program.
Madeleine Jackson made one save to earn the shutout, her fourth of the season. Her goals-against average is now 0.20, second-best in Division I.
"It was a good game for us," said Pillion. "The home winning streak is a great thing to be part of. We love playing here. I think the atmosphere is great. We have great fans. It's especially good after we played all those games on the road."
Princeton hosts American Tuesday night and is at Columbia Saturday morning. The Tigers are tied with Penn at 3-0 in the Ivy League, one game ahead of Harvard at 2-1.
