Field Hockey's Ivy Streak Comes to an End With 3-1 Loss to Dartmouth

They say all good things must come to an end. Making sure of that Saturday in the rain was a determined Dartmouth field hockey team.
Ashley Choren scored despite falling down on the turf nine minutes into the second half to give the Big Green the lead and Shala Byers converted a penalty corner attempt later in the half to add insurance as Dartmouth ended Princeton's 32-game Ivy League winning streak with a 3-1 victory over the Tigers at a soaked Class of 1952 Stadium.
Dartmouth (2-3, 2-0 Ivy), which ended a 15-game losing streak to Princeton dating back to 1989, trailed 1-0 at halftime but tied the game just 2:26 into the second half when Lindsay Gossage intercepted a Tiger clearing attempt and scored past goalie Juliana Simon.
The Big Green's go-ahead goal came courtesy of a length-of-the-field run by Audrey Knutson, who controlled the ball down the right side of the field. She then sent a pass into the circle to Choren, who redirected it into the cage despite losing her balance in the process. Princeton (1-5, 1-1 Ivy), which hadn't lost an Ivy game since a 2-1 loss at Brown Oct. 9, 1999, took the lead 16 minutes into the game thanks to a combination effort from the Schmidt sisters. Junior Hillary Schmidt started a penalty corner attempt for the Tigers with a push, and sister Paige then scored on a drive past Dartmouth goalie Lauren Balukjian for a 1-0 Tiger lead.
Balukjian made four of her six saves in the first half, including two diving stops, and also made a diving stop on a Kelly Darling attempt in the second half. The Big Green was outshot 10-8 for the game but outshot Princeton 5-3 in the decisive second half.
The Dartmouth insurance goal came with just under 12 minutes left in the game. Gossage pushed a penalty corner attempt to Allison Welsh, who set up Byers for a drive into the right side of the cage at the 58:29 mark.
Princeton, the 10-time defending Ivy League champion, won its Ivy opener over Yale this year, finished 7-0 in Ivy League play each of the last four years and won its final three league games of the 1999 season after that loss to Brown. The Tigers are now 67-2 in league play sincethe beginning of the 1994 season.
Princeton next plays on Friday, Sept. 24, traveling to Columbia for a 7 p.m. game.
