UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Karin Grap scored on a breakaway situation with 3:15 left in the 15-minute overtime period as No. 19 Penn State defeated Princeton, 1-0, in a field hockey game played at rainy Bigler Field Tuesday night.
Grap took a feed from Michale Rigby and scored past Princeton goalie Juliana Simon in the six-on-six overtime situation to end a game that featured plenty of scoring chances but little scoring. Rigby had earlier taken a feed from Amanda Eckert after the Tigers had pressured the Lions in Penn State's defensive end.
Princeton (2-6), which fell to Penn State for the fifth straight time, put pressure on the Nittany Lion net often near the end of regulation and in the overtime period, getting four penalty-corner opportunities in the final 18 minutes of the game after going without a corner in the first half.
Penn State (6-5) outshot the Tigers 20-13, including 12-7 in the second half, but was consistenly denied by Simon, who had a season-high eight saves, including five in the second half. The Lions had six second-half penalty-corner situations but did not score in the half.
Penn State goalie Megan Akstin had four saves.
Princeton plays at home twice this weekend. The Tigers host Boston University Friday afternoon before playing No. 12 Richmond Sunday morning at Class of 1952 Stadium.
