BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Frank Macreery and Dave Nightingale finished fifth and sixth, respectively, each earning places in the NCAA championships as individuals, and the Princeton men's cross country team finished third overall out of 28 teams at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional meet at Lehigh Saturday afternoon.
Race winner Georgetown and second-place American earned the automatic team bids to the Nov. 21 NCAA championship race out of the region, but the third-place Tigers still have a chance to earn an at-large team bid to that race at Indiana State. Those at-large bids will be announced on Sunday.
In any case, Macreery and Nightingale will be in Indiana next Monday thanks to strong performances over the extended 10K course at the Goodman Campus. The duo ran together and finished within one second of each other in fifth and sixth places at 30:12.2 and 30:13.2.
Freshman Michael Maag also had a strong performance in his first regional meet, finishing 23rd in 31:12.1.
The Tigers barely missed qualifying as a team, finishing with 97 points, just three-points behind second-place American. Georgetown's winning score was an impressive 45, and the Hoyas' Fleet Hower won the race individually with a time of 30:03.8.
Also scoring for Princeton were Ben Stern, who placed 30th, and Frank Tinney, who was 33rd. A 35th-place finish for Justin Pines gave the Tigers six runners in the race's top 40. Macreery and Nightingale, and potentially the Tigers as a team, will be returning to the site of the Pre-Nationals meet in October at Indiana State. Macreery finished 18th overall in the "White" race at that meet, while the Tigers were 11th as a team.
