PRINCETON - Freshman Annie Greenwood scored four goals, including three in the first period, to lead the Princeton women's hockey team to a 6-2 win over Colgate Saturday afternoon at Baker Rink. The win gave Princeton a sweep of its home ECACHL weekend and improved the Tigers' record to 7-4-2 overall, 4-0-0 in the league.
Princeton outshot Colgate 28-24, including 10-5 in the decisive first period. Goaltender Roxanne Gaudiel made some key saves for Princeton, including several key stops in the final period when Colgate was making one last run.
"Our kids played hard from the start," Princeton head coach Jeff Kampersal said. "Greenwood played really good, and she was in the right place at the right time on a couple of those goals. When we had breakdowns, Roxanne made big saves. It was a good all-around game for us today."
Princeton made sure to get Colgate goaltender Brook Wheeler quite well in the first period, scoring each of their four goals from no more than a few feet away from the junior Raider. Greenwood opened her career day with a goal 2:03 into the game after making a backdoor cut into the crease area and taking a perfect feed from Laura Watt, who set Greenwood up in a perfect spot on Princeton's only power play of the period. The freshman from New Canaan did the rest, beating Wheeler for the 1-0 lead.
The only goal of the period not scored by Greenwood was scored by classmate Christine Foster, who was on the doorstep when Chrissie Norwich fired a shot on goal. Wheeler's redirection was handled cleanly by Foster, who found an opening for her second goal of the season. The rest of the period belonged to Greenwood, who scored her second and third goals of the period within 2:11 of eachother late in the period. Princeton took a 3-0 lead on a play that was ignited by an aggressive effort by Kim Pierce, who battled a pair of Raiders on the leftside boards. The puck came loose behind the net and was picked up by Greenwood, who skated around one Colgate defender and got in front of the net. She kept the momentum and beat Wheeler to find a clear opening for her seventh goal of the season.
Her eighth goal wouldn't come much later. A blueline shot by Kate Hession was redirected to Greenwood, who once again stood perched in the right spot at the right time. Her position earned her the first-period hat trick, as she was once again able to find the back of the net.
Colgate got one back in the second period, as Clancy Todd scored her first goal of the season at the 13:27 mark of the period off assists from Elin Brown and Tara French. Colgate mustered eight shots in the period, one fewer than Princeton, but Roxanne Gaudiel did the job in maintaining Princeton's comfortable lead. Gaudiel and the Princeton defenders did a good job limiting Colgate to deep shots and keeping the crease safe for the majority of the period.
The third period opened with a quick flurry of goals, beginning with a Princeton tally 27 seconds into the final stanza. Dina McCumber sent a loose puck ahead to Salmon, who came in on a 2-on-1 advantage. Salmon held the puck the whole way and sent her shot over the glove of Wheeler, giving her goal number five on the season and point number two on the day. Becky Irvine got that goal back less than a minute later, though, coming along down the ice and beating Gaudiel for the unassisted goal.
Play got chippy from there, as there were six penalties, including a pair of coincidental minors. An interference call on Heather Jackson with just more than 10 minutes remaining gave Colgate a chance to get within two goals for the first time since the first period, but Princeton blocked two shots and then drew a penalty to even the advantage. Greenwood put the game on ice shortly thereafter, scoring on the power play after a slapshot from the blue line was blocked, and she was once again waiting in the doorstep. She put it way for the 6-2 lead.
