Princeton, N.J. - Senior Lauren Ehrlichman scored Princeton's first three goals and sophomore Sarah Yuki added the first two goals of her career as the Princeton field hockey team downed Yale 5-1 Saturday afternoon at Class of 1952 Stadium in both teams Ivy League opener. Ehrlichman's goal 7:15 into the game proved to be the game-winner as the Tigers picked up their first win of the 2005 season.
Princeton controlled play for much of the game, but that goal by Ehrlichman early in the first half was the only goal on the scoreboard for more than 42 minutes. Princeton outshot Yale 11-4 in the period, with five of the shots on net, but could not stretch the lead beyond one goal thanks four saves by Yale goalkeeper Elizabeth Friedlander. Ehrlichman's goal in the half came after she received a cross pass. She took an initial shot that Friedlander saved but followed up on her own rebound to make the score 1-0.
The score remained tight through the end of the first half and the first 14 minutes of the second half, but Ehrlichman made it 2-0 at 49:36 of the game. Off a penalty corner, Friedlander saved freshman Sarah Reinprecht's shot, but the rebound bounced up in the air where Ehrlichman slapped it over her and into the Yale goal.
Her third goal of the game came at 62:05 and sparked a five-minute stretch in which Princeton scored three times. First Ehrlichman redirected a pass from sophomore Nicole Ng for her fourth goal of the season. Then Yuki scored twice, first deflecting a pass from sophomore Paige Schmidt behind Friedlander, and then scoring off a pass from senior Hillary Schmidt at 67:15. Yale was able to add a goal to the final score with no time on the clock after the ball was knocked down by a Princeton player's hand late in the game. Emily Palilonis converted on the penalty stroke attempt.
Princeton outshot Yale 23-9 in the game and had four penalty corners chances. Princeton junior goalkeeper Juliana Simon made one save to earn her first win of the season. Friedlander made eight saves in the loss.
Princeton is now 1-2 on the season and 1-0 in the Ivy League. Yale has an identical overall record but is 0-1 in league play. Princeton returns to action tomorrow afternoon when Connecticut visits Class of '52 Stadium at 12 p.m.
