Princeton, N.J. - The Princeton field hockey team fell 4-2 to Connecticut Sunday afternoon at Class of '52 Stadium. After UConn took an early 1-0 lead, freshman Kristin Schwab scored to even the score up, but three more Husky goals in the half gave Connecticut the win. Senior Hillary Schmidt tallied Princeton's other goal.
The Tigers fall to 1-3 on the season and return to action next Saturday at Dartmouth. Connecticut is now 4-1.
Rebecca Helwig opened the scoring for Connecticut 8:17 into the game when she scored on a backhanded shot after cutting across the field. Schwab tied the score a little more than three minutes later. Senior Lauren Ehrlichman carried the ball towards the net and fed a pass across the goalmouth to Schwab who directed it in for her first collegiate goal.
The score remained tied for the next six minutes until Helwig's backhand paid off again for the Tigers. Helwig sprinted upfield with the ball and fired across the grain to make the score 2-1. Meagan Hoffman and Lindsay Leck also scored in the first half to extend UConn's lead to 4-1. Hoffman scored after Laura Puddle fed her a pass in front and Leck found herself alone in front and scored.
Princeton played strong team defense in the second half, limited UConn to just four second half shots as the Tigers focused on drawing even. Four penalty corner chances also helped attempt to comeback, but the Tigers were only able to convert once in the half. The goal came 10 minutes into the half when sophomore Paige Schmidt faked a shot off the penalty corner and fed her sister Hillary, who had just played the ball in on the corner, who was alone on the side of the net and scored her first goal of the season. Connecticut Melissa Bostwick made two saves in the game to pick up the win. Junior Juliana Simon played the first half for Princeton and made three saves and allowed four goals, while junior Alkison Nemeth made one save and held UConn scoreless in the second half.
