PRINCETON, N.J. - It took until the team's 22nd shot in the 72nd minute, a goal by sophomore Diana Matheson, but the Princeton women's soccer team (2-4-2) broke through with four goals in the second half and held La Salle (3-6-1) without a shot in a 4-0 victory over the Explorers on Tuesday night at Lourie-Love Field.
Matheson scored her third goal of the year at 71:43 off an assist from senior Maija Garnaas, the first of her two assists on the night. That was the start of a three-goal flurry in the space of just over eight minutes as the next two to find the net came off the foot of freshman Sarah Peteraf for the first two scores of her career. Her goal to give Princeton a 2-0 lead came when La Salle keeper Lauren Malizia missed a cross from Allison Williams and Peteraf had an open corner of the net to knock the ball in. With one second remaining on the clock, junior Amanda Ferranti pushed the ball up the field to sophomore Aubrey Wagenseller for the Orange and Black's final goal.
Princeton ended up with 28 shots, 14 in each half, and earned six corner kick opportunities while La Salle had none. Tiger netminder Maren Dale earned her first victory in three decisions, while her counterpart Malizia made six saves, taking the loss. The four-goal total doubles any single-game offensive output this season for Princeton and is the most goals since the team's first-round NCAA Tournament win over Central Connecticut State last season in which the Tigers scored five goals on 30 shots.
Princeton returns to the Ivy League schedule at Dartmouth on Sunday at noon. The Tigers go without a home game for two-and-a-half weeks until Oct. 15 when Columbia comes to Old Nassau.
