Kinzer's Goal Lifts Princeton to 1-0 Shutout of No. 19 American
October 22, 2006 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON -- Sophomore Katie Kinzer scored midway through the second half and senior Allison Nemeth made 10 saves as the Princeton field hockey team defeated No. 19 American 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Class of '52 Stadium.
The first half was fairly even and defensive with both teams taking seven shots. Both teams had good chances, including an American flurry six minutes in where Nemeth stopped Savannah Graybill in front of her goal, and two shots by Princeton sophomore Sarah Reinprecht on penalty corners, one that went wide and one that was saved by American goalkeeper Allison Fayfich. Nemeth came way out of her goal to make a key save on American's Kaitlin DeTroia late in the half.
There were more offensive chances in the second half as Princeton outshot American 10-6 in the half. American started the half strong and took five of the first six shots of the period, but the one that Princeton took was the one shot that decided the game.
Princeton quickly countered an American offensive play as sophomore Leah Hoagland carried the ball deep into the Eagle zone. There she fired a crossing pass through the circle that Kinzer was able to get her stick on and direct into the American goal. The goal was Kinzer's seventh of the season and was also her fifth game winner.
American quickly pressured following the Princeton goal, but Nemeth was equal to the task, making several saves in the minutes immediately following the Princeton goal. Around the 50-minute mark, play swung to the American end as Princeton looked to add an insurance goal. Princeton's best chance came off a penalty corner in the 55th minute. Junior Paige Schmidt's shot was saved and the rebound bounced to junior Micaela Vie Brock at the post, who got a shot off, but it ended up going wide of the net.
Nemeth finished the game with 10 saves as Princeton improved to 9-6 for the season. Fayfich made eight saves in the loss.
The win was Princeton's second win this season over a ranked opponent. The Tigers also defeated William & Mary earlier this season by an identical 1-0 score with Kinzer scoring the game winner.
Princeton returns to action next Sunday afternoon against Rutgers at 1 p.m. The game will be played at Class of '52 Stadium. It had been listed incorrectly as being at Rutgers earlier this season.
