CANTON, N.Y. - Brown goaltender O'Hara Shipe made 42 saves to lead her team to a 1-0 shutout of fifth-ranked Princeton in the second semifinal of the 2006 ECAC Hockey League Championship. Brown's Rylee Olewinski gave the Bears a lead midway through the second period and Shipe made 19 saves in the second period and 15 in the third for the win.
The loss drops Princeton to 21-7-4 on the season, while Brown improves to 15-12-5. Semifinal winners Brown and Harvard will meet in Sunday's championship game.
Neither team scored in the first as both took a while to get comfortable. Brown had the first shot of the game but Princeton had the best chances of the period. Princeton's first good opportunity came shorthanded when senior Sarah Butsch rand a shot off the near post of Brown goaltender O'Hara Shipe. Princeton continued to pressure on the conclusion of the penalty as the Tigers gained control low and put three quality shots on Shipe that she was able to handle.
Princeton's final real good chance of the period came when freshman Christine Foster fed senior Tarah Clark on the doorstep, but Shipe was able to handle the quick shot. Princeton outshot Brown 9-5 in the opening period, but neither goaltender cracked and the game went to the first intermission scoreless.
Princeton continued to control play throughout the second period, but a turnover just past half way led to a Brown goal and gave the Bears a 1-0 lead. After a Princeton shot was blocked at the blue line, Hayley Moore gained control of the puck and started back the other way with a 2-on-1. Moore fed Rylee Olewinski who went into the Princeton zone on a breakaway. Olewinkski faked forehand, then went to the backhand to score her fifth goal of the season. Princeton continued to pressure after the goal but could not get anything by Shipe, as she made 19 saves in the period. Gaudiel made six for Princeton in the period.
As it turns out, the goal was all that Shipe needed as she finished the game with 14 saves in the third period to record 42 for the game and shut out Princeton 1-0. The Tigers dominated the play in the third period as it looked as though they were skating with an extra attacker. Princeton pulled the goaltender late looking for the equalizer but Shipe was equal to the task as she stopped junior Dina McCumber's blast with five seconds left to seal the win.
Princeton will wait to hear its fate tomorrow night when the NCAA announces the field for the 2006 NCAA Tournament. The eight-team field will be announced at 8:45 p.m. on CSTV.
