Princeton Heavyweights Win Henley
July 03, 2006 | Heavyweight Rowing
The Princeton men's varsity eight met up with the Leander Club in the final of the Ladies Plate Challenge at the Henley Royal Regatta on the Thames River in England on Sunday. Princeton established an early lead and held their advantage throughout to win by half a boat length in a time of 6:19.
The Princeton crew contained five of the nine members that won the Temple Cup at Henley as freshmen in 2003. The win gives them, and Princeton, their second Henley win in four years.
Princeton began the weekend on Friday by topping the Worcester Rowing Club by almost three lengths in its first race. Princeton then defeated Stanford by more than two lengths in the semifinals on Saturday, before its race with the Leander Club on Sunday.
The Henley Royal Regatta was established in Henley-on-Thames, England, on March 26, 1839 and has been held annually ever since except during the two World Wars. The Cup has always been open, except in the Olympic Games year of 1908, to all established amateur clubs.
