WORCESTER, Mass. – The No. 5 Princeton University heavyweight rowing team earned a second-place finish in the team point standings at Eastern Sprints Sunday at Lake Quinsigamond. The Tigers ended the day with four medals.
The Tigers accumulated 34.00 points to finish second behind Harvard, who was first with 41.00 points, and ahead of Dartmouth, who came in third with 33.00 points.
"I'm very proud of the way that our whole team raced today," said Head Coach Greg Hughes. "The racing was some of the most fiercely contested that I've ever seen, and I was thrilled to watch four of our boats earn meals in such tight racing. The varsity eight final was a race for the ages with little between all six boats for the length of the course. It was an honor to be a part of a race like that.
It's been an exciting year of racing in the heavyweight men's league and the team is eager to get back to work in preparation for the IRA."
After a productive morning session, the Tigers had four boats competing in Grand Finals and one Petite Final in the afternoon session.
Little separated all six boats in the 1V Grand Final. Princeton (5:37.575) won bronze, coming in just behind Dartmouth (5:35.577) and Harvard (5:33.895) while finishing ahead of Yale (5:38.275), Brown (5:38.783) and the University of Pennsylvania (5:39.133). The Tigers' 1V has now medaled 48 times at Eastern Sprints and won bronze on 16 occasions.
The 2V (5:42.634) won silver, finishing just behind Harvard (5:39.500) and ahead of Dartmouth (5:45.824) in a hard-fought race. The medal was the 12th all-time in program history for the 2V and the sixth silver.
The 3V (5:48.738) also collected silver, with the Crimson (5:44.868) winning gold in another close race. The 3V's medal was its 13th all-time at Eastern Sprints along with its seventh silver.
The 5V (6:11.229) also medaled for the Tigers, winning bronze. Brown (6:09.803) won silver and Yale (6:05.853) won gold in the 5V Grand Final.
The 4V (5:59.516) earned a first-place finish in the Petite Final, crossing the finish line ahead of BU (6:02.852).
