CAMDEN, N.J. – The No. 5 Princeton University heavyweight rowing team had a strong opening day at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championship at the Cooper River, with all three 8+ boats advancing to their respective A/B semifinals.
"It was a good first step for the team in today's heats with solid opening round races for all of our boats," said Head Coach Greg Hughes. "We're excited to advance onto tomorrow's semifinals."
The 1V (5:34.110) finished second in its heat, just behind Dartmouth (5:32.560) and ahead of Navy (5:39.510) to secure a spot in the A/B semi.
The 2V (5:40.050) earned a first-place finish in its heat, crossing the finish line in front of Dartmouth (5:43.550) and Boston (5:46.210).
Likewise, the 3V (5:47.550) moved on to the A/B semi after taking second in its heat. Yale finished first (5:42.570) and Cornell (5:50.390) third.
The 4+ competed in two races, first finishing seventh (6:10.356) in the time trial and advancing to the A/B/C semifinal. The Tigers then narrowly missed out on a spot in the Grand Final, coming in a close third (6:21.360) behind Syracuse (6:20.520) and Washington (6:17.520) to secure a position in the Petite Final.
"It was a great day of racing to put all three eights into the A/B semifinal tomorrow," said Associate Head Coach Matt Smith. "Our 4+ also put down a great piece and will race again tomorrow. The entire team stepped up after we had to adjust lineups earlier in the week. Saturday will see some of the fiercest racing the collegiate level has ever seen with how deep the field is in all events."
