Kinzer's Late Goal Lifts Princeton to 1-0 Win
September 10, 2006 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON -- Sophomore Katie Kinzer deflected a blast from junior Paige Schmidt into the William & Mary goal with 2:33 remaining in regulation to snap a scoreless tie and lift the Princeton field hockey team to a 1-0 win against the 17th-ranked Tribe on Sunday afternoon at Class of '52 Stadium.
For most of Sunday's game the action as back-and-forth as Princeton edged the Tribe in shots 7-6 in each half. William & Mary had one more corner attempt than Princeton, including a chance in the games final 30 seconds.
The first good scoring chance of the day came 15 minutes into the first half when Princeton was awarded a penalty stroke. Sophomore Sarah Reinprecht took the shot and beat Tribe goalkeeper Gwen Hunter, but the ball hit the face of the post and bounced away. William & Mary's best chance of the opening period came with eight minutes remaining when senior goalkeeper Allison Nemeth made a sliding save on a blast from Laura Kastelic off a penalty corner.
Play in the second half mirrored the first as the goalkeepers made important save for their teams. Hunter made a kick save on a blast from Princeton sophomore Kraftin Schreyer and Nemeth closed her pads on a shot from William & Mary's Katie Broaddus. The goalkeepers were the starts of the game as Nemeth made fours saves to collect the shutout and Hunter stopped seven Tiger shots.
Facing overtime, Princeton forced a corner just in front of the William & Mary cage with less than three minutes remaining. Junior Micaela Vie Brock played the ball in to Schmidt, who carried it into the circle and wound up. Her shot was deflected by Kinzer in from of Hunter and found the back of the cage. The goal was Kinzer's second consecutive game winner as she scored the winning goal yesterday at Yale.
The win was Princeton's first this season against a ranked opponent as Princeton's first two games came against ranked teams. It was Princeton's fourth one-goal game of the season. It also was Princeton's second in as many days as the Tigers moved to .500 at 2-2 this season. Princeton remains 1-0 in the Ivy League and is back in action next Saturday against Dartmouth.
