Tigers Comeback Attempt at Penn State Falls Short
September 06, 2006 | Field Hockey
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Princeton field hockey team scored two goals in a 10 minute span midway through the second half to erase a 2-0 Penn State lead and tie the game at 2-2, but the seventh-ranked Nittany Lions reclaimed the lead 48 seconds later and held off Princeton for the 3-2 win on Wednesday night.
Penn State jumped out to an early lead when Saun Banta scored 6:30 into the game on a tip-in from the right side. Natalie Blasco made it 2-0 in Penn State's favor late in the first half when she tipped a crossing pass into the Tiger goal as the Lions took a 2-0 lead to the half.
The Tigers battled back in the second half as junior Nicole Ng scored her first goal of the season in the 42nd minute to move Princeton within a goal as she one-timed the ball into the cage off a pass from sophomore Leah Hoagland.
Princeton then pulled even at the 50:06 mark when Hoagland notched her second goal of the season, this time scoring off a penalty corner. The score only remained tied for 48 seconds however when Blasco scored her second goal of the game, redirected a shot that originated from outside the circle.
Penn State outshot the Tigers 16-5 for the game. Princeton senior goalkeeper Allison Nemeth made six saves.
Princeton fell to 0-2 with the loss while Penn State is now 4-2. The loss was Princeton's second this season to a nationally ranked opponent. The Tigers will look to climb into the win column when they next play on Saturday at Yale.
