Field Hockey Breaks into Win Column Saturday at Yale
September 09, 2006 | Field Hockey
NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Sophomore Katie Kinzer scored 14 minutes into the second half to snap a 1-1 tie and lift the Princeton field hockey team to a 2-1 win at Yale on Saturday afternoon in its Ivy League opener. Freshman Kaitlin Donovan opened the scoring for the Tigers in the first half.
Princeton outplayed Yale in the first half but was unable to crack the scoreboard despite outchancing Yale. Princeton pressured late and earned a penalty corner with seconds left in the half. Junior Micaela Vie Brock played the ball in and the Tigers got on the scoreboard when Donovan converted on a pass from sophomore Sarah Reinprecht for her first goal of the season as Princeton took a 1-0 lead to the half.
Yale knotted the score three minutes into the second half as the teams found themselves tied once again when Harriet Thayer scored on a pass from Cat Lindroth. Yale continued to pressure with three more shots in the first 10 minutes of the second half, but the Bulldogs were unable to score, and Princeton reclaimed the lead 14 minutes into the period.
Freshman Tina Bortz fed Kinzer with a pass and Kinzer got a shot off that Yale goalkeeper Elizabeth Freelander got a piece of, but not enough as it trickled into the goal and the Tigers went ahead. The goal was Kinzer's first of the season and the assist lifted Bortz into a tie with sophomore Leah Hoagland for the team lead in points with five.
Princeton senior goalkeeper Allison Nemeth made five saves to earn the win for Princeton, while Friedlander made 11 saves in the loss for the Bulldogs. Princeton outshot Yale 17-11 and outcornered Yale 16-3.
The Tigers are now 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the Ivy League. Princeton returns to action tomorrow at 1 p.m. against No. 17 William & Mary at home.
