January 15, 2007 | Men's Track and Field
Winning performances in the distance events on the track and in the field events highlighted Princeton's day at the New Balance NYC Gotham Cup Friday at the Armory in New York City.
Alex Pessala won the weight throw event for the second straight week with an impressive toss of 17.71 meters, well clear of the second-best throw from John Rouse of Texas. Teammate Andrew Park also won an event for the second straight week, the pole vault, with a leap of 4.95 meters that was well clear of second place Shane Smith of Coppin State.
On the track, Princeton took three of the top four spots in the seeded bracket of the 5,000 meters. Frank Tinney was the winner in a time of 14:38.55, while Justin Pines and Paul Rosa were second and fourth respectively.
The Tigers also had a strong performance in the team distance medley relay, finishing third in that event in 10:22.91 behind the efforts of two seniors, Pete Quinzio and Aaron Reed, and two freshmen, Jeff Carbonella and Tom Zozokos.
Princeton was also fourth in the 4x400 meter relay behind seniors Rich Stewart and Brian Shields and sophomores Ian Thomson and Matt Brock, while Stewart himself was third in the 400 meters in a time of 48.82, less than half a second behind the winning time.
Back on the field, Nate Crumpton, who was seventh in the long jump competition, finished in the top five in the triple jump with a leap of 14.59 meters.
