Bucknell Jumps on Women's Soccer Early, Holds On for 4-1 Win
October 31, 2007 | Women's Soccer
LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Bucknell scored three goals before the 30-minute mark Wednesday night in Lewisburg, Pa., and didn't allow the Princeton women's soccer team back in the game as the Bison held on for a 4-1 win.
The loss was Princeton's first to Bucknell in the sixth game of the series, though the first five games were from 1995-99. Princeton had won 18 of its last 19 games against Patriot League schools in a streak that dated back to 1997.
Bucknell's leading scorer, Jennifer Dervarics, scored first in the 11th minute on a crossing pass and had her second goal with 16:45 to play in the first half on another cross. Kelsey Johnson had Bucknell's other two goals, her first two of the season. The first was in the 25th minute, an arcing shot that gave the Bison a 2-0 lead. Johnson added her second in the 72nd minute to put Bucknell up 4-0 when she recovered a loose ball off a corner kick.
Diana Matheson had Princeton's goal in the 75th minute on a penalty kick, her second such goal this month. Bucknell only held a 12-9 advantage in overall shots, but six of those were on net as Tiger goalkeeper Maren Dale had two saves. Bison goalkeeper Kathryn Sutton made four saves.
The Tigers will have to recover quickly for their next game, an Ivy League contest against co-Ivy leader Penn. A Tiger win would put Princeton in good position to nab the league's NCAA tournament bid, and while a tie would also keep Princeton alive, a loss would eliminate the Tigers from bid contention.
