Penn Stops Women's Soccer's Postseason Bid with OT Goal
November 03, 2007 | Women's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA -- Dreams of returning to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2004 came to an end on Penn's Rhodes Field for the Princeton women's soccer team when an overtime goal lifted the Quakers to a 1-0 victory and at least a share of the Ivy title.
The goal came from a Penn player with a Princeton connection, as Kristin Kaiser, who headed in a crossing pass from Mara Fintzi 2:35 into overtime, is the sister of Kevin Kaiser, a Tiger hockey player.
The win also gives Penn an important tiebreaker should the Quakers lose at Harvard and Princeton defeat Yale next week. Princeton fell to 4-2 in the Ivy League, 8-7-1 overall, while Penn lifted its league mark to 5-1. The Quakers will be rooting for a Yale win or tie over Brown Sunday, which would allow Penn to clinch the Ivy League's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Brown and Yale were scheduled to play Saturday night, but heavy rain in New England forced postponement.
Penn outshot Princeton 9-3 overall and 4-0 in shots on goal with the Tigers' Maren Dale making three saves.
Princeton will host Yale next Sunday at 1 p.m. A Penn loss next Saturday at Harvard would open the door for Princeton to share the Ivy crown with Penn if the Tigers were to knock off the Bulldogs.
