The Princeton field hockey team faces it second top-three opponent in a two-week span this Sunday when third-ranked Connecticut visits Class of '52 Stadium at 12 noon.
The Tigers played three times last week to cap a stretch of five games in an eight-day span, in which Princeton went 3-2, topping Columbia, Colgate and Richmond, while falling to second-ranked Maryland and Cornell. Princeton plays just once this weekend, on Sunday against Connecticut.
Last weekend the Tigers had their 17-game Ivy League winning streak snapped when Cornell edged the Tigers 4-3 at home. Princeton jumped to a 2-0 lead in the game, before Cornell rallied to go ahead 3-2 in the second half. Junior Holly McGarvie scored late to knot the game at 3-3, but a Cornell goal in the closing seconds ended the Princeton streak.
The following day Princeton jumped on a struggling Richmond squad early and never let up in a 5-1 win over the Spiders. Sophomore Kaitlin Donovan, who scored her first goal of the year at Maryland, scored Princeton's first two goals, and later junior co-captain Candice Arner scored a goal to go along with the assist she tallied on Donovan's first goal.
McGarvie and Donovan each had two goals over the weekend, while Arner and sophomore Kaitlyn Perrelle each had a goal and assist. Junior Sarah Reinprecht had a pair of assists.
Now with a 3-1 Ivy League record, the Tigers are even with Cornell for second in the Ivy League standings with identical records. Harvard, at 2-0 sits in first, while Penn, at 2-1, is just percentage points behind Princeton and Cornell. Harvard and Cornell meet in Ivy action this weekend, while Penn has two non-conference games scheduled.
This weekend Princeton will look to test itself against an NCAA final four team from last season. The Huskies, who defeated Princeton in the NCAA quarterfinals a season ago, are 11-1 this season, with their lone loss coming to Villanova in their league opener. UConn has wins over Penn State, Yale Michigan, Michigan State, Harvard and Louisville to its credit, and visits Georgetown on Friday evening.
Connecticut is 8-5 all-time against Princeton and 4-1 at Princeton. The teams met twice last season, with UConn taking both games by a combined score of 5-0, winning 2-0 at home in the regular season, and 3-0 at Princeton in the postseason. Princeton has dropped five straight to UConn, last winning in the 2002 season.
Princeton plays back-to-back road games next weekend, visiting Brown on Saturday and Providence on Sunday.
