Women's Soccer Adds Another Ivy Win, Tops Brown 4-1
October 06, 2007 | Women's Soccer
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Two goals in each half helped the Princeton women's soccer team to a 4-1 win Saturday afternoon at Brown, avenging back-to-back wins in the series by the Bears.
Diana Matheson scored three minutes apart in the 22nd and 30th minutes, adding a second-half assist to give the senior midfielder nine points in her last two games. The Canadian national teamer has played just three games since returning from the Women's World Cup in China two weeks ago.
With the win, Princeton stayed in first place in the Ivy League at 2-0-0 and ran its winning streak to five games for an overall record of 5-4-1. The three-goal margin of victory ties Princeton's largest in the series' 30 games, matching another 4-1 win 2001.
"I thought we came out a little flat, but we pulled it together," Princeton head coach Julie Shackford said. "Obviously, Diana had a tremendous day and that was key. We had good contributions from the bench with Allison Williams and Regina Yang scoring goals. Overall, it was a team effort and everyone who came off the bench gave us a spark. I'm happy to be 2-0 in the league."
The first goal came on a give-and-go from Aarti Jain, which Matheson hammered in from just inside the 18-yard box. Her second goal came from similar distance off a pass from Marissa Sampias that found Matheson with only Brown keeper Steffi Yellin to beat.
Princeton carried the two-goal halftime lead despite Brown holding a slight advantage in shots in the first half, 9-6, and drawing four corner kicks to one for the Tigers. But Princeton's defense was up to the task and the Bears entered the break without a goal.
Yang pushed the lead to 3-0 early in the second half with the first goal of her career, sending a ball booted out of Brown's defensive zone back toward the goal from about 30 yards and over Yellin's reach.
Williams added her first career goal 10 minutes later, getting behind the Brown defense after passes from Marci Pasenello and Matheson to grow the lead to 4-0, but Brown answered within two minutes. After Brown drew a foul in the box, Julia Shapira took the penalty kick and put the ball in the upper left corner.
Princeton finished with a 19-15 advantage in shots while Yellin made six saves to three for the Tigers' Maren Dale. The teams combined for 11 corner kicks with Brown leading that category 6-5.
The Tigers will look to keep their Ivy League start going Saturday at 1 p.m. against Columbia on Powers Field at Princeton Stadium.
