UMass Edges Princeton 2-1 in NCAA Field Hockey Play-In Game
November 06, 2007 | Field Hockey
Lauren Gillespie scored with 9:26 remaining in regulation to lift Massachusetts over the 17th-ranked Princeton field hockey team 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon in an NCAA Tournament Play-In Game at Class of '52 Stadium.
Princeton controlled play throughout, but was unable to capitalize on its many scoring attempts. The Tigers outshot UMass 6-4 in the opening half, but four themselves down a goal 1-0 when the Minutewomen scored off a penalty corner with no time left on the first half clock. Katelyn Orlando controlled the ball and found Kara Murphy on the far post who took a shot from five feet out and scored her third goal of the season.
Princeton returned to the playing field for the second half strong and knotted the game at 1-1 2:30 into the half. Off a corner, senior Paige Schmidt scored on a blast that bounced off the UMass goalkeeper Becky Latourneau and into the goal. Sophomore Christina Bortz and junior Candice Arner assisted on the goal. The goal was her ninth of the season.
The Tigers continued to pressure from there but couldn't solve Latourneau, who made 12 saves in the win. UMass countered with around 10 minutes to go and went ahead 2-1 when Gillespie deflected a Jaime Bourazeris shot high into the net with 9:26 left on the clock.
Princeton turned on the attack over the final minutes looking to even the score, but Latourneau stood strong, making five saves in the final minutes to secure the win.
The loss drops Princeton to 13-5 overall on the season. The Tigers will look to hear their name mentioned as an at-large selection when the NCAA announces the tournament field tonight at 8 p.m.
