The 18th-ranked Princeton women's water polo team opens both its home and league schedules this weekend against Bucknell and Maryland. Princeton comes into the weekend fresh off its third consecutive ECAC tournament championship last weekend at Harvard. Fans can catch all of this weekend's action live from DeNunzio Pool with video in Tiger Zone.
The games will be the first two of three regular season women's water polo games that will be streamed live on GoPrincetonTigers.com.
The Tigers improved to 7-4 this season with three wins last weekend. The Tigers were the top seed for the tournament and started things with a win over Slippery Rock. Princeton then defeated Maryland in the semifinals and Brown in the title game. Princeton has now won the title three years in a row and has taken the championship in seven of the last nine seasons.
Princeton will begin league play in search of its third-straight Southern Championship. The defense will begin on Friday night when Bucknell comes to town. Princeton went 4-0 against the Bison last season, claiming three of the wins by a single goal. Bucknell placed third at last weekend's ECAC Championships and is 8-7 overall. Bucknell defeated both Harvard and Maryland, but fell to Brown at last weekend's tournament.
The following day Princeton hosts Maryland in what will be the third meeting of the season between the two teams. Princeton took both prior meetings, winning 15-12 at the Triton Invitational in February and 13-7 last weekend. Maryland is 7-10 overall this season and went 1-2 at last weekend's tournament, losing to both Princeton and Bucknell, but beating Marist. Maryland won a mid-week game over George Washington.
Four Tigers were named to the All-ECAC Tournament team, led by Most Valuable Player Elyse Colgan. Additionally, Colgan, Karina Reyner and Natalie Kim received first-team All-ECAC honors, while Samantha Shaughnessy was named to the second team.
Colgan, along with Phoebe Champion both scored seven goals over the weekend to lead Princeton. Jazmin Brown was the only other Tiger to scored goals in all three games. Colgan raised her team-leading goal total to 27, while Champion and Reyner each now have 16. Kim, who played all but a couple minutes in the cage over the weekend, made 27 saves over three games.
